If you have curly hair, you know the drill: Some days your curls look like they’re straight out of a haircare ad, and other days…well, let’s just say they have a mind of their own.
While we can’t guarantee picture-perfect curls every day (because, honestly, who can?), we do have some simple tips to help you bring out the best of your natural texture on a regular basis. Think hydrated, defined, shiny curls that last from wash day to wash day—here’s how.
1. Understand your curl type.
Before diving into products or techniques, take a moment to get to know your curl type. Curly hair comes in all kinds of shapes and textures, so knowing your hair’s unique pattern and porosity can make it easier to choose the right products and methods.
Not sure what your curl type is? No worries—check out our easy-to-follow guide.
2. Focus on hydration first.
Curly hair naturally craves more moisture than straight hair since it’s harder for the scalp’s oils to travel down spiral strands. Keeping your curls hydrated promotes strength, enhances definition and adds shine—pretty much everything you need to set yourself up for a great hair day.
Start with a moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to cleanse without stripping and nourish your hair from root to tip. For extra TLC, add a hair mask to your weekly routine.
3. Detangle with care.
Curly hair + tangles = inevitable, but the way you detangle can make all the difference. Avoid brushing or combing dry hair—it can lead to breakage and frizz. Instead, tackle tangles while your hair is wet and coated with conditioner. The extra slip will make it easier to work through knots gently.
Use a wide-tooth comb (or your fingers) and start at the ends, working your way up. This method prevents tugging and minimizes damage.
4. Style on wet hair.
Want major definition? Apply your styling products while your hair is still wet or damp. Whether you're using gel, foam or cream, be sure to distribute the product evenly so every curl gets its share. Then, gently scrunch upwards to help the curls clump together and hold their shape.
Remember: less is more. Too much product can weigh down your curls and leave buildup on your strands, so start small and add more only if needed.
5. Pick products that get along with your hair.
With so many curl products out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. The good news? You don’t need a dozen products or a complicated routine to get your curls looking their best. The key is to focus on what your hair needs most—whether that’s volume, definition, frizz control or all of the above.
Here are a few of our go-to products for curls of all kinds:
- Leave-in Conditioner: for deep moisture, frizz control + detangling
- Flex Hair Gel: for a crunch-free, flexible hold
- Air Dry Styler: for light moisture, frizz control + volume
- Hair Oil: for high shine, hydration + smoothing

6. Plop or press to dry.
To keep your curls defined as they dry, try plopping or pressing instead of rubbing your hair with a towel. These methods minimize friction so your curls stay in shape.
How to plop:
- Lay a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel flat.
- Flip your head forward so your curls fall onto the fabric (think upside-down).
- Bring the fabric over your neck and tie it around your head, securing it with a knot.
- Let your curls sit for about 15-20 minutes to soak up excess moisture and set your curl pattern.
If plopping isn’t for you, press your t-shirt or towel gently into your hair to squeeze out extra water while preserving your curls.
7. Don’t touch too much.
We know the temptation—your curls are perfectly soft and springy, and you just have to touch them. Fluffing and twirling, however, can invite frizz and flyaways. Once your curls are dry, try to leave them alone as much as possible if you’re going for a more defined look.
8. Protect your curls while you sleep.
Curls need beauty sleep, too. To keep your curls from losing their shape overnight, try pineappling. It’s easy—simply gather your curls at the top of your head in a high, loose bun and use a soft scrunchie to secure. This helps prevent flattening while you sleep.
For extra protection, wrap your pineappled hair in a silk or satin scarf, or sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase. The smooth fabric reduces friction and helps preserve your curl definition. In the morning, just refresh your curls with a little cream or oil, and you’re good to go.
9. Get regular trims.
Curly hair is more prone to split ends, which can cause your strands to lose their shape and definition. To keep them looking fresh and healthy, aim for a trim every 6-8 weeks.
