When you think about style, your mind probably goes straight to how things look. Clothes. Hair. The visual cues. And sure, that’s part of it. But the full picture of your vibe (yes, aura points included) has another layer: scent.
It’s invisible, but unmistakable. And whether you mean to or not, it’s always along for the ride.
Think about it—your shampoo and conditioner, the laundry detergent on your clothes, what you cooked for dinner last night. Most scented things you come across in your daily routine have a decent chance of coming with you out into the world, quietly announcing themselves to everyone you meet. Even when you’re not trying, your scent is telling a story. (Case in point: pheromones.)
There’s a rabbit hole of research behind why you gravitate toward certain scents—and how the people around you interpret them through their own memories and experiences. The scents you carry become a kind of wrapping for the essence of… you.
Blended fragrance—aka where top, heart and base notes meet.
If you’re into wearable fragrance, you’ve probably heard the terms before. But a quick refresher helps set the scene.
Top notes (sometimes called head notes) are the first impression. They hit your nose right away and fade the fastest. They’re often bright, citrusy or fresh.
Heart notes (also known as middle notes) are the main character. They linger longer and carry the core personality of a fragrance—think floral, fruity, sweet or softly spicy.
Base notes (or bottom notes) bring depth and staying power. They’re the foundation—woody, musky, resinous—and the last thing to stick around on your skin or hair.
Put together, these layers create a clear beginning, middle and end. Just like a good story.
Science says scent and emotion are stored as one memory.
Our response to scent is deeply personal—and it starts early. Every place you’ve been, every experience you’ve had, came with a smell. Over time, those associations stack up, shaping what you love, what you avoid and what feels familiar.
Researchers say scent is the most transportive of all five senses. Which explains why you might forget plenty of things you’ve seen or heard—but one familiar smell can instantly pull you into a specific moment, time or place.
Fun fact: the human nose can distinguish at least 1 trillion different scents. And no matter how complex they seem, every scent comes down to some combination of five atoms: carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur.
Freshly brewed coffee. Cut grass. A backyard campfire. Oven-warm cookies. All of it—different arrangements of the same basic building blocks, triggering wildly different stories.
Which brings us to ours.
How the Odele signature hair scent gave way to a collection of 100% natural fragrance mists.
When Odele first landed in the haircare aisle in 2020 with three shampoo + conditioner duos and three stylers, each bottle contained the same scent: Oakmoss / Ylang Ylang.
"Truth be told, specific notes weren’t front of mind when we set out to search for the fragrance that would go on to be our signature hair scent,” remembers Odele co-founder Lindsay Holden. “Our thoughts were more around how it would be experienced as it relates to what Odele stands for—clean and inclusive. We wanted a fresh, gender-neutral scent made with 100% natural fragrance. Of all the options that came back, Oakmoss / Ylang Ylang (formally known as “Marine”) was the obvious winner. Fresh and green with watery, mineral notes, a hint of floral and a hint of cucumber. Not too feminine, not too masculine. It was just right.”
It didn’t take long before fans started asking for it beyond shampoo and conditioner.
So when the time came to introduce fragrance mists, we didn’t stop at one. Alongside Oakmoss / Ylang Ylang, we added Grapefruit / Orange Peel (the same scent you’ll find in our Scalp + Body Scrub and Cream Pomade), plus two exclusives: Pink Pepper / Santal for Ulta and Rosewood / Vanilla for Target.
All four are light, layerable hair + body mists—made with niacinamide, tremella extract and vitamin B5 to refresh style and finish the look.
Stories about our fragrance mists from the team that brought the collection to life.
Every scent carries a story. Here’s how a few members of the Odele team describe theirs.
Oakmoss / Ylang Ylang
Airy and earthy—like clean, crisp air you can catch in your pocket.
“The fresh notes of Oakmoss / Ylang Ylang remind me of the first time I swam in the ocean and got my first kiss from the sun (aka sunburn). I was 16 years old. It was my first time in Mexico at a tropical beach. The warm air, relieved by a periodic gust of wind. The sound of crashing waves and water rushing toward my toes as I approached the water. I took my first plunge and can still smell (and taste) the water. It was cool, salty and refreshing.” — John, Innovation + Brand Expansion Director
“This one feels like the ocean after a long day in the sun. Sitting on the beach with a cold cucumber drink in hand, hair damp and mixed with salt.” — Missy, Social + Content Director
Grapefruit / Orange Peel
Bright and punchy—like head-to-toe optimism made wearable.
“It takes me straight to summer afternoons—chasing down the ice cream truck to get a creamsicle. Bright sun. Carefree.” — Missy, Social + Content Director
“Scent evokes memories of places and experiences that I have had around the world. One spritz of the Grapefruit / Orange Peel Hair + Body Mist brings me right back to Seville in December of 2011—a weekend getaway with a few of my best friends while styling abroad. Citrus grows abundantly across southern Spain in the winter months; the streets of Seville are lined with bitter orange trees that explode with white blossoms that perfume the air with delicate floral-citrus aroma. I had never experienced anything like it up until then, and I haven't experienced anything like it since.” — Chris, eCom and Digital Director
Pink Pepper / Santal
Woodsy and spicy. What dark academia smells like, probably.
“The woody, spicy notes of Pink Pepper / Santal remind me of my uncle’s leather wallet and his generosity. When I was young, sometimes he would hand me a crisp $20 bill—just because. Whenever he pulled out his billfold, I always caught a distinct whiff of aged leather.” — John, Innovation + Brand Expansion Director
“The feeling of sunkissed skin and pruned fingers after a long day playing mermaids at the pool.” — Jessica, Product Knowledge Manager
Rosewood / Vanilla
Honeyed and homespun. With room for cream and sugar.
“It feels like stepping into a quiet bookstore and finding a corner all to yourself. Cracking open a new book, that soft, papery scent mixing with something warm and a little sweet.” — Missy, Social and Content Director
“The first REAL day of spring when the sun is shining, the birds are singing and suddenly summer doesn't seem so far away.” — Jessica, Product Knowledge Manager
